Flint Corn (Dark Red)

THB 50.00

Dark Red
Wine-red kernels. Grows vigorously.

Description
Flint Corn is generally characterized by mid-sized ears with multicolored kernels that grow vigorously under suitable conditions. This hardy crop has a “flinty” seed coat and is appropriate for human and livestock consumption. A carbohydrate-rich food source, the immature kernels are consumed raw, cooked, or roasted. Grains are pounded or ground as meal or flour to be used in baking or as cooked cereal. Kernels are often soaked before grinding and after fermentation and can be used to prepare dishes such as “kenkey” or “pozole.” Cornstarch is used as a thickening agent. Young tassels may be boiled and eaten, and the pollen is used as a soup ingredient.

Flint Corn is a warm climate crop that thrives in open, sunny environments with daytime temperatures of 20-24°C. Rainfall during the growth period should be 500 mm or more. Flint Corn can be planted during the rainy season or the dry season with irrigation. It prefers well-drained soil and grows best with a pH of 6.0-7.0.

Scientific Name: Zea mays var. indurata
Common Names: ข้าวโพด, ข้าวสาลี
Plant Information Sheet: Maize
